Hi,

Any body help me regarding Neumann boundary condition shown in this paper. I suppose this problem has been solved in comsol 3.5 by seelecke and presented in boston - 2008 conference. But i am trying in comsol 4.2. Please let me know how to put forward the boundary condition..:)I am attaching the paper you can see the boundary condition in section 2. If u would like to have a eye on my model to correct me i will provide u .mph file also...

non uniform heat flux

Hello all,

I'm trying to model simple 2D conduction model in a slab. What I want to do is use a non-uniform heat flux for a boundary condition. I already have the heat transfer coefficient distribution along that boundary, which is a gaussian type distribution. Instead of using a gaussian distribution I would prefer to actually call a file that will assign the values of the heat transfer coefficient along the boundary. Do you know if that is doable?

Thanks,

Problems with S-parameter calculation

I do not understand the behavior of the transmission parameter S21 in a rectangular wave guide excited with two Port, there are differences in behavior between S21 and dBS21, these are the following differences:

-S21 has peaks. Evident when exporting data and analyze it presents oscillation between 1 and -1

-dBS21 plot in COMSOL, the oscillatory beahavoir of S21 is not presente and what is more strange is when calculated
with the formula (dBS21 = 20 * log (abs (S21)), I get different values from those used in the graphic COMSOL dBS21 and the oscillatory beahavoir is present.

If Comsol used otherwise for caculation of dBS21 parameter please enlighten me, that the results did not close.

Please help me!

Inverse heat transfer problem

Hello,

I need to determine the surface temperature by doing an inverse heat transfer problem method.

Experiments are done with impingement of a hot steel plate(900°C) with 3 thermocouples located at 1mm below the surface. The data is measured at a rate of 150Hz. This gives a nice temperature/time dependence at these locations.

Is is possible in COMSOL4.2a to load these data sets from the thermocouples into COMSOL to perform a inverse heat transfer problem to calculate surface temperatures/heat fluxes?

One boundary with two boundary conditions (Neumann and Dirichlet)

Please help me to understand about this issue.

I have a system of two PDE equations with two variables (u1, u2) need to be solved in General Form.

On a boundary 1, for example, I set up a Neumann boundary condition:
-n.Γ1 = f1
-n.Γ2 = f2

And then, still on the boundary 1, I set up one more Dirichlet boundary condition:
u1=f3 (Prescribed value of u1)
u2=f4 (Prescribed value of u2)

And I saw Comsol let me know that, the two conditions contribute together. So, which condition in two condition above will perform (affect to u2 on the boundary 1) in my model? (Both of them?)

Thank you so much for your help.

Best regards,

streamline problem

Hey, i am having some problems creating the steamlines for my Helmholtz coil. I followed the steps for the one of the model on comsol website for Helmholtz coil except other than revolve to create the coils i did extrusion instead. Now i am getting something really weird for my streamline and I compared with the Helmholtz coil file i downloaded from the website and i looks like I did the exact same thing with the example. I couldn't figure out what might possibly go wrong. I have attached a picture of the streamline I have now. Can you tell me what I did wrong and help me fix it? Thank you.

How to Improve Convergence in Natural Convection

$

I am wondering how I can improve convergence in my natural convection model. It is a simple model; an isothermal aluminum plate in water.

The model starts out fine but as the run continues (transient model), the plume begins to lose stability causing the problem to reduce its time stepping. I have tried re-meshing as much as my PC can handle (3 mil elements).
I am wondering what else I can do to solve this problem. Should I change tolerances, crosswind or streamline parameters. I am running out of ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated ( as I have been stuck on this problem for several days now). I have attached the model (with no mesh or solution). Typically, the model solves the first 20-30 seconds, then the solution becomes very strange and results become unreasonable.

Simulatneous temperature distribution...!

Dear Comsol Users,

I am willing to come over to you again, this time with some questions I would like to be enlighted.
I've built a 3D heat exchanger (coil) inside a material (cylinder) and with Comsol, I would like to figure out the temperature distribution in the coil and on the material (cylinder). For this purpose i used "conjugate heat transfer" thinking that could give the both temperature distribution. Unfortunately, I only have velocity/pressure and temperature distribution
of the fluid inside the coil and nothing regarding the material...!!!!

- So I ask to you which other physics should I apply or did I used the previous module in the wrong way?
- What can I do to have the temperature distribution in the cylinder?
- Which physics moduls should I apply together in order to evaluate both fluid and maerial?
- Please, how to evaluate then the heat transfer coefficient?

Thanks in advance for your replies and look forward to hear from you guys.

Vibrating horizontal plate.

Good Evening everyone,

I have a really simple question, I'm sure someone knows the answer to my problem.
I'm trying to make a model of a plate, platform, anything you want to call it, that vibrates only horizontally, like a piezoelectric device. Can anyone give me some kind of explanation on how to do it?

Thank you very much.

4 Point Bending of a Multi-Layer Bar with simultaneous phase transformations

$

Hello all,

I have been trying to simulate a 4-point bending test of a multi-layer bar with a geometrically simple 2-d model on COMSOL 4.3a.

For the better understanding of the case,

The bar consists of 3 horizontal layers, the nethermost one consists of a 5 mm thick Ni-base superalloy PWA 1484, the middle layer is an intermetallic compound NiAl with 80 micrometer thickness and the uppermost is Al2O3 with 5 micrometer thickness.

In order to simplify the 4 point bending test, I have adjusted two points on the top of the bar and assigned point loads in the negative y-direction, since the case is a bending under compressional load. 2 other points were also assigned for this stationary case at the netherrmost surface of the bar in order to fix the bar in the y-direction, in other words to contribute the deformation and bending of the bar. The model is quite simple, even for a beginner like me, but efficient indeed. As attached you might find this quite simple model, in order to understand the problem.

Now, I would like to take another step and couple this model with a time-dependent concentration change. Since my middle layer is a diffusional coating which would break down with time due to the Al depletion and instead of NiAl, in the middle layer Ni3Al would form with proceeding time. This case effects also the mechanical properties, therefore the 4-point bending mechanics, since the Elastic Modulus of my 2nd layer should be concentration and time dependent. Therefore the attached model should be somehow modified to compute a time-dependent and isothermal concentrational change and couple it with the initial 4 point bending under constant load.

More accurately, the concentration of the 2nd layer at the beginning should be pure 100 % NiAl, but as the time proceeds the NiAl should be completely consumed and the concentration should drop linearly (for simplification) to 0 % at the end, while the concentration of Ni3Al should start from 0% and increase to 100% linearly. Time dependence of the concentration and this phase transformation causes the elastic modulus of my second layer to be also time and concentration dependent.

Unfortunately, I couldnt achieve the so-called concentrational gradient with a time dependent study of transport of diluted species under the chemical species transport module.

Can someone suggest me a real beginner-friendly and simple approach to this problem? In reality the case is much more struggling since the growth rate of Ni3Al is not linear and affected by the deformation also. As a start, I thought that it would be much more simple for me to try a linear approach. Every idea for a better approach is welcome and appreciated.

With sincere regards,

Ceyhun

Compressible and transient flow problem

Hi,

I am trying to model a tank full of air that empties with time through a thin channel (It is almost a nozzle). I used the laminar-transient formulation. I chose from the library the properties of air. I selected the compressible formulation, with a mapped mesh for fluid mechanics (20000 elements), and I chose a time step of (0,0.01,2). The program is in 1% after 1 day of computation.

Any clues of how can I improve my model to get it done faster? This is a 2D model (axisymmetric formulation) ,and it surprises me that is taking toolong. Should I use the microfluidics module for this case? Should I modify the time step? In the boundary conditions the model has an initial pressure, and the nozzle has the open boundary condition. I am looking forward to finding the time that takes to empty this tank.

Attached is my model

Thanks

modeling heat transfer/heat loss of solenoid

heyo!

working on a magnetic bearing project, and would like to find change in temperature a chosen distance outside solenoid due to current flow. also would like to find magnetic field and energy lost to heating.

have been working to use "multi-turn coil domain" for solenoid and joule heating for heating part. haven't convinced myself that these are correct/most efficient physics to use for the purpose

any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

it is so simple. A solenoid with current

I want to solve a stress by magnetic field.

Until magnetic analysis is everything is okay but after I add the solid mechanics.

I got this error

Failed to evaluate variable Jacobian.
- Variable: mod1.curlAx
- Geometry: 1
- Domain: 2

I do not thing, just add the physics

Please reply to me.

Failed to generate mesh

Hi all,
I am trying to simulate the magnetic field of a permanent magnet. Initially the simulation worked. Later I changed the length of the magnet but an error arose saying

A problem arose when building mesh feature 'Free Tetrahedral 1'.
Failed to generate mesh for domain.
- Domain: 2
Failed to insert point.
- x-coordinate: -6
- y-coordinate: 40
- z-coordinate: 24.8202
Internal error in mesh initialization.
- Detail: Failed to determine cavity.
Error in multiphysics compilation.

I cannot figure out the problem. If I change the lenght to previous value it works. But if I make the magnet longer the same error pops up. Help please

problem of self-defined parameter and build-in variables

I am using poroelasticity module. I have a problem about the self-defined parameter and build in variables.

I defined shear modules,G, as a function of axial displacement, w (a build in variable), and w is also influenced by G. i.e, they are interacted with each other. But I find that the self defined function G hasn't been invoked by the module.

In other words, how to self define a function or variable which is correlated to build in variable in comsol. I find it doesn't work if I just type a function in the to-be-defined variable.

anyone can give me some suggestions?

Running the simulation for the required time span in more than one times (loops)

Dear sir,

My requirement is "Running the simulation for the required time span in more than one times (loops)".

I actually do not know the initial values of temperatures of the room that I am going to analyse on CFD. So, I wish to run it for more that one times (or you can say loops) so as to stabilise my results and compare them with the real world ones. Is it possible and how should I do it??

magnetic forces direction in post-processing

Hi all,

I have made a 2D simulation for the stress distribution due to magnetic forces in a synchronous reluctant machine, I want to show how the forces act on the boundaries of the stator teeth and the rotor outer diameter. I try to use the arrow and first principle stress but the stress and force arrows were distributed randomly around the domains of the machine parts.
Please, does any one have any idea that can help. thanks in advance.

triple point heat transfer gas, liquid, solid

$

Hello,

I want to know if it possible (or if it exists some tips) for modeling a triple point where gas, solid and liquid are in contact each over. At this point I have a huge loss of heat by conduction and I would to measure it and compare with experiment (and with over simulations where analytic functions describe the heat transfer coefficient near the triple point).

I try to reduce at maximum mesh size near this point, i have some issue with convergence when i decrease the parameter giving me the temperature width of the phase transition of my material. (Cp variation)

Some ideas?

Thank you

Problem in thermal stress modelling

Sir,

I am working on thermal stress modelling on EDM process using COMSOL 4.0a. I am using heat flux as a input.

At some places I am getting negative Surface Temperature which gives me wrong results of stresses. I have tried in many ways to solve it. When I apply very fine meshing it gives errors. And I also found that as I change mesh size negative temperature also changes.

Is this problem related to mesh size only or any thing other???

Thank You

MPCs in Comsol

Hi,
I am a quite new user in Comsol and I have a doubt about the Multi-Point Constraint elements. I would like to know whether Comsol has anything similar to the MPC elements (RBE3 or RBE2) of Patran.

I am doing a static calculation (stress and strain) in a hollow cylinder as you can see in the attached image. The idea is to apply a punctual force in the point that I have created in an extreme of the cylinder’s axis. In Patran, I used to create a RBE3 element to transmit this load to the affected elements (for example to the elements in the front face that you can see in red). ¿Does Comsol have anything similar to the MPC elements? If not, ¿is there any equivalent way for doing that?

Thanks a lot,

Manu
